The City of Covington would like to make our citizen’s aware that we are in the process of applying for grant funds from the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) to fund the planning and construction of the elements along Jackson Street from South Byrd Avenue to South Lee Avenue:

This will include 1,200 feet of new sidewalk on both sides of Jackson Street from South Byrd Street to South Lee Street including new pavement, and pedestrian crosswalks across the north and south portions of Byrd, Stewart, and Lee Street. The new crosswalks will be stamped to create the appearance of brick. This project will include drainage improvements along Jackson Street, North and South Lee Street, North and South Stewart Street, and North and South Byrd Street. The drainage ditch improvements will include rock lining, (4) drop inlets to prevent water from running across Jackson Street, and the construction of 1,600 feet of drainage pipe along the railroad to prevent water from standing on the southern portion of the project area.

Renderings are available for the public to view.

City Council will hold a public hearing digitally on Tuesday, February 2, 2021, at 6 p.m. in order to solicit public input on local community development and housing needs in relation to Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and discuss funding for a project for Jackson Street and necessary adjacent areas.

The meetings are open to the public for viewing on the Zoom platform at

If citizens have any questions, comments or concerns on the project please be sure to contact Becky Scott the City Clerk at (540) 965-6300 or by submitting requests to
