CALL FOR INTERIM APPOINTMENT
TO COVINGTON CITY COUNCIL - DISTRICT 2
As a result of the untimely passing of Mr. Fred F. Forbes III, the Covington City Council must make an interim appointment to fill the District 2 seat on City Council in accordance with the provisions of Code of Virginia § 24.2-228.
The City of Covington is accepting letters of interest and resumes from individuals who wish to be considered for appointment to serve as the District 2 representative on City Council until the vacancy is filled in accordance with state law.
Individuals interested in serving must meet the following qualifications:
• Must be a qualified voter of the City of Covington.
• Must be a legal resident of District 2 within the City of Covington.
• Must maintain residency in District 2 throughout the term of service.
• Must be eligible to hold public office under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Must be willing and able to attend all regular and called meetings of City Council and fulfill the duties of the office.
• Applicants who currently serve on any board, commission, or committee appointed by the Covington City Council must resign from that position prior to being appointed to City Council.

The City of Covington Public Works will be flushing Fire Hydrants throughout the City between the dates of Sunday, April 12, 2026, through Friday, April 24, 2026. This will take place from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. beginning the evening of April 12th. Please be aware that this may cause color discoloration of your water. If you notice any discoloration, turn your water on and let it run until it clears up. The City of Covington would like to inform citizens and businesses that all City of Covington offices and State Offices will be closed on Friday, April 3, 2026, in observance of Good Friday. The Refuse Collection for Friday, April 3, 2026 will be collected on Thursday, April 2, 2026. All offices will reopen on Monday, April 6, 2026.

2026 SPRING CLEANUP
Spring Clean-up for the City of Covington
Covington City residents will have the opportunity to dispose of unwanted items through the City’s Spring Clean-up to be held the weeks of April 27th, 2026 through
May 8th, 2026. Your spring clean-up items will be picked up on your regular refuse collection day. PLEASE NOTE: If your items are not out on your designated clean-up day, we will not be able to return due to time restrictions. The City will only pick up articles placed at the resident’s normal refuse pickup area. The Clean-up does not include commercial or contractors who have debris. Residents are advised to keep white goods (stoves, refrigerators, etc.) & tires separated from other disposed of articles. Tires on rims will not be accepted. There will be a limit of 6 tires per resident. Tires and brush will be picked up separately. “WHOLE TREES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.” One (1) truckload per household will be strictly enforced. The City will be divided into East and West sections using the CSX Railroad Tracks as the dividing line during the two (2) weeks clean-up.

Proclamation Signing Ceremony

Notice is hereby given that the City of Covington will host a proclamation signing ceremony on Wednesday, March 11, 2026 at 3:00 PM in the Covington Council Chambers, located at 333 West Locust Street, Covington, Virginia 24426. The City, in partnership with the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors, the Town of Clifton Forge, and the Town of Iron Gate, will conduct ceremonial signings for the following proclamations:
1. Designating April 2026 as Clean Up Month in the Alleghany Highlands.
2. Designating March 2026 as National Multiple Sclerosis Education and Awareness Month.
3. Additional proclamations may be added prior to the signing.
One representative from each participating locality will be present to sign applicable proclamations.
This event is open to the public. Area residents and visitors are welcome and encouraged to attend in support of these community initiatives.

Notice is hereby given that the City Council of the City of Covington, Virginia will conduct a Public Hearing pursuant to § 15.2-2006 of the Code of Virginia (1950, as amended) on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at 6:30 PM in the Council Chambers of City Hall, located at 333 West Locust Street, Covington, Virginia.
This notice shall be published once a week for two successive weeks in a newspaper of general circulation in the City of Covington with the first notice appearing no more than 28 days before and the second notice appearing no less than seven days before the hearing.
The meeting is to consider vacating certain undeveloped public rights-of-way pursuant to § 15.2-2006 of the Code of Virginia. The proposed vacation involves portions of undeveloped public right-of-way, including areas of E. Sycamore Street and an original 15-foot alley, located at and adjacent to the former Rivermont School property, for purposes related to the Rivermont redevelopment project.
All interested persons are invited to appear and present their views.
The plat and supporting materials showing the areas proposed for vacation are available for public inspection in the Office of the Building and Zoning Administrator, Eric Tyree, at (540) 965-6357.

The City of Covington’s Building and Zoning Office has received a request from Sherry Barker regarding the property located at 515 E. Cypress Street (Lot 20, Block 293, Section 8), which is zoned C-2. Mrs. Barker is requesting a Special Exception Permit to allow a freestanding structure that was installed as a replacement for the former front awning prior to receiving approval. This request seeks authorization for the structure to remain on the property.

Purpose: Procurement of Non-Professional services to repair/replace Oak Wedge blocking under the Rayon Bridge. This has been a critical recommendation by our bridge inspection firm (Mattern & Craig) and per VDOT and the FHWA if the repairs are not made it could result in the closure of the bridge all together. The cost of project estimated to be $ 38,000.00 and will be updated if necessary.

Boil Water Advisory to Consumers of
The City of Covington LIFTED
As of December 20, 2025, the Boil Water Advisory has been lifted for homes in The Water Treatment Plant of the City of Covington.
The Boil Water Advisory was issued on December 16, 2025, after service interruption and loss of water pressure to customers of The City of Covington Water Treatment Plant.
A series of bacteriological samples were collected and sent to a state certified lab. All samples collected on December 17th & 18th were absent of both total coliform and E. coli bacteria in the area where the Boil Water Advisory is currently being lifted.
Following flushing the service line and premise plumbing, residents can safely resume normal use of their tap water.
