PUBLIC NOTICE

As a result of the untimely passing of Mr. William “Lance” Carson, the Covington City Council must make an interim appointment for District 1 in accordance with the provisions of Section 24.2-228 of the Code of Virginia (1950, as amended).  All interested persons who have legal residency within the boundaries of District 1 and are interested in serving on an interim appointment basis, please submit a resume and cover letter to Amber Nicely, City Clerk, 333 W. Locust Street, Covington, Virginia 24426 no later than August 15, 2025.

Food and Fund Drive

The Commissioner of Revenue's office is participating in the 7th Annual Commissioners and Cans Food Drive to benefit Feeding Southwest Virginia during the month of August. We have a box in my office to collect food items (canned meats, vegetables, fruits, peanut butter and jelly, macaroni and cheese, soup, pasta and sauces, cereal, oatmeal, condiments and spices). You can also make a monetary donation. We can take checks made payable to Feeding Southwest Virginia. You can also make monetary donations online at:

We appreciate your assistance in making this food drive a success. Your donations go to your local food bank and will nourish a child, family, senior, or veteran facing food insecurity in your community.

The following streets will be under construction for re-paving, Raymond Ave., Hamilton Drive, and Asbury St.

Raymond Ave, Hamilton Drive & Asbury St

Beginning Monday, August 4, 2025, weather permitting the following streets will be under construction for re-paving, Raymond Ave., Hamilton Drive, and Asbury St.  This work will include mill and overlay.  NO ON STREET PARKING from 6:30 a.m. through 6:30 p.m.  Delays should be expected between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. throughout the duration of the project.  There will be flaggers directing traffic for one lane usage. Thank you for your understanding and we apologize for the inconvenience.

Downtown Area Road Closures August 7 – 9 , 2025

The City of Covington would like to make citizens and businesses aware that beginning August 7th the Covington Public Works Department will start blocking off parking lots and portions of streets for this weekend’s Kars Unlimited Street Scene.  The following schedule will be followed through the weekend in preparation for the activities.

Thursday, August 7, 2025; beginning at 5:00 p.m. half of Mid City Mall Parking Lot will be blocked off (on the Discovery Center side)

Saturday, August 9, 2025; beginning at 5:00 a.m. the following areas will be blocked off; Mid- City Mall, City Hall Parking Lot, 200 block of N. Court, 300 block of Locust, 200-400 block of Main St, and the 100-300 block of N. Maple Ave.
All areas will reopen at 5:00 p.m.

Alleghany County Transfer Station usage for City Residents

Effective August 1, 2025

The City of Covington would like to make residents aware that effective Friday, August 1, 2025, if you personally take refuse to the Alleghany County Transfer Station, you will be responsible for any and all fees.

Residential Charges @ Island Ford Transfer Station as of August 1, 2025

0 - 1/4 ton =

 $   25.18

         

1/4 ton - 1/2 ton =

 $   50.36

         

1/2 ton - 3/4 ton =

 $   75.53

         

3/4 ton - 1 ton =

 $ 100.71

         

For car tires, the charge will be $2.00 each.

     

For truck tires, the charge will be $4.00 each.

     

For appliances, the charge will be $10.00 each.

     

City residents will need to supply the transfer station with their current

 

address for billing purposes.

 

The City of Covington will bill City residents for these services and payment can be made to the City via mail or at the City’s Treasurer’s Office.

         

The City of Covington’s refuse trucks will still pick up your refuse on your normal day.
