Peter’s Mountain Landfill Closure

June 9, 2025 – June 13, 2025

The City of Covington would like to make citizens and businesses aware that on Monday, June 9, 2025 through Friday, June 13, 2025 Peter’s Mountain Landfill will be closed.

All refuse will be sent to Alleghany County Transfer Station.

Your refuse will be collected as normal.

City of Covington citizens and businesses will be allowed to take refuse to the Transfer Station, as needed.

Peter’s Mountain Landfill will reopen on June 16, 2025.

FAQs

Q: How much is the water bill each month?

A: $90.00

Water: $27.50
Sewer: $34.50
Garbage: $28

This includes water, sewer and garbage pickup. Please contact Public Works, (540) 965-6321 or (540) 965-6322, for your garbage pickup day for your area.

Q: When is my payment due?

A: The 21st of each month by 5 PM

A $6 late penalty will be applied on the 22d of each month, if the monthly charge is not paid or if there is a past due balance on your account.

If either of the above mentioned dates fall on a weekend, those events will take place the following business day.

Q: When is my account subject to be cut off?

A: If your PAST balance due is $96.00 or higher at day 46 of deliquency, your account will be added to the cut off list, your services will be disconnected, and an administrative fee of $35 will be added to your account balance. That fee along with the past due balance, are both required to be paid before your services can be restored. It may take up to 2 business days to have your services restored.

Q: How can I pay my bill?

A: You may pay your bill by mail, in person, online bill pay on our website, electronic funds transfer (ACH / EFT), or the payment can be left in the drop box that is located outside of the City Hall building. Keep in mind that if you pay by debit/ credit card, there will be a 3% fee added to your payment upon processing. More information regarding payments is on the back of this sheet.

Q: What do I do if I suspect a leak?

A: During business hours, Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 3:00pm, please contact the Public Works Department at (540) 965-6321 or (540) 965-6322.

Outside of business hours and on holidays, please call the Non-Emergency Dispatch number at (540) 965-6333.

Other Useful Information

Bills are generated and mailed by no later than the 6th of each month.

If you have a balance that is over 45 days past due, and have further questions, please see the Cut Off Policy section below and follow the State guidelines included within State of Virginia House Bill No 906.

City Hall hours: Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm.

Public Works: Please call (540) 965-6352 or (540) 965-6374 for leaks or garbage pickup.

Cut-off Policy

Guidelines under the Emergency Utility Protection Act

Your account must be at least 46 days past due. This means, if you have a past due balance due from December (for example), your account will not be on a cut of list until February, according to state guidelines.

  • Cut offs will NOT occur if the forecasted temperatures are 32° and below or 92° and above.
  • Cut offs will NOT occur on a Friday, a weekend, a state holiday or the day before a state holiday.
  • Cut offs will NOT occur during a Governor declared state of emergency order.

You will receive a cut off notice at least ten days prior to the cut off date, informing you of the past due balance and when the cut of date will be.

You have until 5:00 PM on the business day prior to the cut off date to pay that balance or there will be a $35 administrative fee applied to your account and services will be disconnected on the said cut off date.
