Thomas Smals is the Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Covington.  He graduated from Radford University, Class of 2014, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism.  He resides in Covington, Virginia with his wife Katlyn, his daughter Kiersten, and their two dogs.  He has been employed with the City of Covington since March 2015.  He started his career as the Recreation Coordinator and was promoted to the Director position in July 2023.  His work involves planning, assigning, and supervising programs, along with supervising employees in the department, as well as producing well-rounded community recreation programs, a park system, a senior center, and a well-maintained cemetery.  Thomas is also highly involved with the public relations and social media platforms used by the City of Covington.
